learning and pays its own way over time, whether it is set up as a non-profit, a company or a hybrid of the two; the models that last are the ones where the legal form, the source of money and the way results are measured all match the problem. Passion starts these organisations. Structure keeps them open.

This guide is written for readers in India first, but most of it applies anywhere. It compares the three models, what Indian law says about each, how founders raise money and recruit people, and how to measure results. Even India’s CSR framework does not define the word “NGO”, as the Minister of State for Corporate Affairs told the Lok Sabha in 2021. In everyday use, social entrepreneurs in education start something new to fix a gap in learning: a school for children the system misses, a reading programme, teacher training, a learning centre in a village.

Three things separate a social enterprise from a charity project or from an ordinary tuition business:

A named problem and a named group. “Improving education” is not a problem. “Children aged 10 to 14 in one district who have stopped attending school” is.

A plan to keep going. The work does not stop when one grant ends. Money comes from fees, contracts, donations or a mix, and the mix is designed, not accidental.

Results that are checked. The founder decides before starting what success will look like and how it will be counted.

Is it a career or a cause? Both. The skills overlap with education leadership jobs: leading a team, hiring well, managing money and earning parents’ trust. For the word itself, see what “edupreneur” means.

The problem: children out of school, and children not learning

272 millionchildren and youth out of school worldwide in 2023 (UNESCO, 2025 SDG 4 Scorecard)

70%of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries unable to understand a simple text (World Bank and partners, 2022)

3.22 croreout-of-school children aged 6 to 17 in India (NSSO 2017–18, cited in NEP 2020)

6 to 14the age range for free and compulsory education under India’s RTE Act, 2009

UNESCO notes that the global figure is likely an undercount, because data from several conflict-affected countries is missing.

India’s National Education Policy 2020 calls bringing out-of-school children back into education, and preventing others from dropping out, a top priority. It also says plainly that the old rules have often “inadvertently discouraged public-spirited private/philanthropic schools”, and promises to make school requirements less restrictive so that non-governmental philanthropic organisations can build schools and “alternative models of education” can be tried. For a founder, the policy itself invites new models.

For more on this side, see out-of-school children: causes and solutions.

Non-profit, for-profit or hybrid: three models compared

Most education social enterprises start like this: one founder, one problem, and a plan for who will pay. In short: the non-profit form with company-style governance and no dividends.

Startup India recognition (DPIIT)

The Startup India portal states that, to be recognised as a startup, an entity should be a private limited company, a partnership firm, a limited liability partnership or a cooperative society, with turnover below INR 200 crore in any previous financial year, and that it counts as a startup for up to 10 years from incorporation. Section 8 companies and trusts are not in that list. A for-profit education company may qualify; a non-profit usually will not. Check the portal for current conditions.

RTE Act, 2009

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act covers children aged six to fourteen. Section 18 says that no school, other than one owned or controlled by the government or a local authority, shall be established or function without a certificate of recognition. Section 12(1)(c) requires specified private unaided schools to admit, in class I, at least 25% of the class from children belonging to weaker sections and disadvantaged groups in the neighbourhood. If your enterprise is legally a school, recognition comes first, whatever your legal form; other formats follow different rules, so ask your state education department in writing. See school recognition under the RTE Act goes further.

A note on “not for profit”. The NEP 2020 says all education institutions will be held to similar standards of audit and disclosure as a “not for profit” entity, with surpluses reinvested in education. NIJIN Academy has enrolled more than 1,000 children in Japan since September 2023 (cumulative), according to NIJIN. In India, you can start as a co-owner of a local company (for example you 20%, NIJIN 80%; if you invest, the guide is JPY 1 to 2 million from you and JPY 4 to 8 million from NIJIN) or on a service contract, even as a side job. Investment is optional. As a guideline, compensation is 10% of revenue excluding tax, up to JPY 50 million at JPY 500 million in revenue. It is a guideline, not a promise of income: with no revenue, the formula pays nothing. It can be a non-profit, a company or a hybrid.

What are some examples of social entrepreneurship in the education sector?

Low-fee schools, bridge programmes for out-of-school children, teacher training sold to schools, hybrid online and in-person schools, and cross-subsidy models. See the six patterns above.

Is a social enterprise in education a non-profit?

Not necessarily. It can be a trust, society or Section 8 company, or a private limited company that serves a social purpose and earns fees.

Can a Section 8 company run a school in India?

Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013 names education among the objects such a company may have. Whether it can run a school also depends on the RTE Act’s recognition rules and on your state’s rules for school management. Ask your state education department and a lawyer before you register.

How do social entrepreneurs in education get funding?

Usually in stages: own money, then fees or contracts that prove the model, then grants, CSR funds or investment, depending on the legal form.

Is leading NIJIN Academy India a job or a business?

It is closer to founding a business. The Country Head is both business head and principal, and can start as a co-owner of a local company or on a service contract. Compensation is a guideline of 10% of revenue, not a fixed salary, and income is not guaranteed.

Do I need to be a teacher to become a social entrepreneur in education?

No. What matters is leading people, hiring well, managing money and earning families’ trust. NIJIN does not require teaching experience for its Country Head roles.

Build a school that lasts, with a model that already runs

If you want to start a company in India and solve a problem in education, NIJIN is looking for one founder to lead NIJIN Academy India as business head and principal.
