class="njg">

For education founders in India

To raise funds for a new school in India, first choose the legal form that will own the school, because it decides who can give you money: a trust, society or not-for-profit company can take donations and bank loans but cannot pay profits to investors, while equity and startup funding only fit an education company that is not itself the recognised school. After that, most founders combine four sources in this order: their own money and that of co-founders, loans against a clear project report, donations and grants, and, for the company side, outside investment.

Most articles on how to raise funds for a school are about an existing school paying for a trip, a library or a playground. This guide is for the harder question: how a founder in India puts together the money to open a school, a learning centre or an alternative school in the first place. It does not repeat what a school costs. That is covered in our guide to the cost to start a school in India. Here the subject is where the money comes from.

In this article

Start with the legal form, not the money

The six sources of money for a new school

Your own money and co-founders

Bank loans: what a lender will look at

Government schemes: what Startup India and MSME can and cannot do

Donations: trust, society or Section 8 company

A funding sequence for the first two years

Another answer to the money problem: lead a school without funding it alone

Questions and answers

Start with the legal form, not the money

The clearest example is CBSE. Clause 9.1 of its Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018 places a school under a “Society/Trust/Company” and lists that body’s duties. Two of them matter for funding. The managing body shall ensure that the school is run as a community service and not as a business, and that the funds accruing from the school are spent for the benefit of the same school and extending the cause of education.

Read plainly, this means that a CBSE school cannot be the vehicle for an investor who expects dividends. State boards and state recognition rules have their own conditions, and they differ from state to state, so check yours with the state education department. But the pattern is common enough that every funding plan should start by asking: which entity will hold the recognition, and what is that entity allowed to do with money?

A useful way to think about it. Many founders end up with two layers. The school itself sits in a not-for-profit body (a trust, a society or a not-for-profit company) and is funded by fees, loans and donations. Services that are not the recognised school, such as tutoring, an online programme, software or training, can sit in an ordinary company that may take equity. How the two layers may deal with each other is a legal and tax question: get advice from a chartered accountant or a lawyer before you set it up.

The six sources of money for a new school

Each source of money asks something different of a founder, so it helps to compare them side by side before approaching anyone. (Illustrative image)

Almost every new school starts with the founders’ own money. It is the only source that asks no one’s permission, and it is also what every lender and donor will look for first: proof that you have put something in yourself.

Co-founding is the most underused source. A second founder brings money, but also families, a skill you lack (finance, admissions, teaching) and shared risk. Settle these questions in writing before anyone puts money in:

Who contributes how much, and is it a donation, a loan or a share purchase?

Who decides on fees, hiring and admissions, and what happens when the founders disagree?

Who will be the principal or head, and who will run finance and operations?

What happens if a founder wants to leave in year two?

In a trust or society: who are the trustees or governing members, and how are new ones added?

Bank loans: what a lender will look at

Banks and specialist school-finance companies in India do lend to trusts, societies and private schools, usually for land, buildings and equipment. Rates, limits and conditions change, so ask several lenders and compare the written offer, not the advertisement.

What lenders look at is more stable than the rates. Before you approach one, have this file ready:

The entity’s papers. Trust deed, society registration and bye-laws, or the company’s incorporation documents, with the names of trustees, members or directors.

The land or lease. Ownership papers or a long enough lease, and any change-of-land-use or building approvals the site needs.

The permissions. Whatever your state requires to open a school (often a no-objection certificate and recognition), or a clear timetable for getting them.

A project report. Enrolment by year, fees, staff, running costs and the month in which fees cover costs. See our school business plan guide.

The founders’ own stake. How much the founders or the trust are contributing, and the founders’ or trustees’ financial records.

Do not borrow against full enrolment. A new school rarely fills in year one, so test repayments at well below the numbers you hope for.

Government schemes: what Startup India and MSME can and cannot do

Government schemes help only if your entity fits their definition, and many are written for businesses rather than schools.

According to the Startup India portal, DPIIT startup recognition is open to an entity incorporated as a private limited company or registered as a partnership firm or LLP, for up to 10 years from incorporation, with turnover below INR 100 crore in every previous financial year, and working towards innovation or improvement of products, services or processes. Recognised startups can apply for tax benefits such as the Section 80-IAC tax holiday. The same portal describes the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (corpus INR 945 crore, paid through eligible incubators for proof of concept to commercialisation) and the Fund of Funds for Startups (corpus INR 10,000 crore, managed by SIDBI, investing through SEBI-registered Alternative Investment Funds rather than directly). The Ministry of MSME runs registration and credit schemes for enterprises; whether an education venture qualifies depends on its legal form and activity, so check each scheme’s own page and ask your bank.

Scheme

Who it is for (official page)

Fits a recognised school?

DPIIT startup recognition

Private limited company, partnership or LLP, under 10 years old, turnover under INR 100 crore, working on innovation

Not for a trust or society; possibly for an education company

Startup India Seed Fund Scheme

Startups at proof-of-concept to commercialisation stage, through incubators

Generally no

Fund of Funds for Startups

Startups funded through SEBI-registered AIFs

No; it reaches companies via venture funds

MSME schemes

Enterprises meeting each scheme’s definition

Check scheme by scheme

Want to lead a school in India without carrying all the funding alone?

NIJIN Academy is an alternative school in Japan for children who do not fit conventional school, opened in September 2023 and run by NIJIN Inc. (Illustrative image)

Donations, including grants from companies’ CSR budgets and from foundations, usually go to not-for-profit bodies. In India, a school’s not-for-profit body is commonly one of three forms. The table shows the practical differences a founder notices. The detailed rules (registration, tax exemption and what donors can deduct) are set by central and state law and by the Income Tax Department, so confirm them with a chartered accountant.

Form

Governed by

Who runs it

What founders often weigh

Trust

A trust deed, registered under the law of the state

Trustees named in the deed

Simple to set up and tightly controlled by a few trustees; less easy to bring in new people later

Society

Registration under the state’s societies law, with bye-laws

A governing body elected by members

More members and elections; suits a community or parent-led school

Section 8 company

The Companies Act, 2013, as a company with charitable objects

Directors and members

Company-style governance and filings; profits stay in the organisation

Three practical points on donations:

Raise for something specific. Donors give more readily to a named need with a cost and a date (a library, scholarships for a set number of children, a teacher’s training) than to “the school”.

Do not pay salaries from one-off gifts. Use donations for capital needs and scholarships, and cover running costs from fees.

Money from abroad has its own rules. Donations from outside India, including from relatives or friends abroad, are subject to separate rules on foreign contributions. Check with a chartered accountant before you accept any.

A funding sequence for the first two years

Most funding failures are failures of order: a lease before the permission, a loan before families commit. This sequence keeps each step small.

Founders’ money pays for proof. Spend it on conversations with families, trial sessions in a borrowed room and professional advice, not on a building.

Choose and register the entity. Decide trust, society or not-for-profit company for the school, and whether you need a separate company for other services.

Get the permission path in writing. Ask the state education department which recognition or no-objection steps apply to your plan.

Collect commitments. Letters of intent or deposits from founding families, handled in a way the law allows, tell lenders and donors that the school is wanted.

Borrow for the asset, not for the gap. Use a loan for land, building or fit-out, with repayments you can meet at low enrolment.

Raise donations for named needs. Scholarships, a library, devices or teacher training, once the entity can issue proper receipts.

Add investment only where it fits. Equity belongs in a company that provides services, not in the recognised school.

Another answer to the money problem: lead a school without funding it alone

For many would-be founders, the obstacle is not the idea or the ability to lead. It is having to put in most of the money alone before a single child enrols. One answer is to build the school with an organisation that already runs one.

That is how NIJIN approaches NIJIN Academy outside Japan. NIJIN Academy is a hybrid alternative school: children join from home through a metaverse campus, choose from about 100 live online classes a month, and can also attend physical classrooms across Japan. NIJIN describes it as one of the largest alternative schools in Japan.

1,000+children enrolled since September 2023 (cumulative)

52physical classrooms across Japan

About 100live online classes a month

10%of revenue for the Country Head, as a guide

Figures are those published by NIJIN.

For the founder who leads NIJIN Academy India, there are two ways to start, and investment is optional:

Start on a service contract

No investment. You can begin alongside your current work, even as a side job, and decide later whether to become a co-owner.

Start as a co-owner

A local company set up together, for example 20% of the shares for you and 80% for NIJIN. If you invest, the guide is JPY 1 to 2 million from you and JPY 4 to 8 million from NIJIN, decided with you.

Either way, the compensation guide is the same: 10% of revenue (excluding tax), up to a cap of JPY 50 million. As a guide, JPY 100 million in revenue would mean JPY 10 million, and JPY 200 million would mean JPY 20 million. This is a guide, not a promise of income: when there is no revenue, the formula pays nothing, and anyone you bring in to do part of the role is paid from your 10%. This is not a franchise. You do not pay to copy a format; you lead the school as its founder, business head and principal. Which legal form NIJIN Academy India takes under Indian rules, and every other term, is to be discussed in the interview.

Questions and answers

How do I get funding to start a school in India?

Decide first which entity will run the school, because that sets the options. A trust, society or not-for-profit company can usually combine founders’ money, bank or school-finance loans and donations. Equity investment only fits a company that is not itself the recognised school. Then follow the sequence above: proof, entity, permission, commitments, loan, donations.

Can I get a bank loan to start a school?

Lenders in India do finance trusts, societies and private schools, mostly for land, buildings and equipment. Expect to show the entity’s papers, land or lease documents, state permissions or a timetable for them, a project report and the founders’ own contribution. Compare written offers from more than one lender.

Can a school get Startup India funding?

A trust or society cannot get DPIIT startup recognition, which is open to private limited companies, partnerships and LLPs that meet the official criteria. An education company providing services, such as software or online programmes, may qualify. The Seed Fund Scheme works through incubators and the Fund of Funds for Startups through SEBI-registered AIFs; neither funds a school building.

Trust, society or Section 8 company: which is best for a school?

None is best in general. A trust keeps control with a few trustees, a society suits a member-led school, and a Section 8 company brings company-style governance with charitable objects. All three keep the school’s funds in the school. Choose with a chartered accountant, and check what your board and state accept.

How do I raise funds for a school project or a school trip?

That is a different task from funding a new school: an existing school raising a small, defined sum. Name the cost and the date, ask parents, alumni and local businesses, and report back on how the money was spent. If the school’s body is registered to receive donations, issue proper receipts.

Is the NIJIN Country Head an education leadership job I can do remotely?

It is less a job than a founder’s role: you start and lead NIJIN Academy India as business head and principal. You can begin on a service contract alongside your current work. Location and working arrangements are to be discussed in the interview.

Start a school in India without starting alone

NIJIN is looking for one founder to start and lead NIJIN Academy India. Teaching experience is not required. Experience of managing an organisation and hiring people is what we value most. Investment is optional.

See the Country Head role in India

Where to go next

The Country Head role is also open in other countries, and the global page covers every other country.

India

Country Head (global)

NIJIN careers in English

Related guides for founders

Cost to start a school in India: the items to budget for

School business plan in India: how to build one

How to start an education NGO in India

Is school a profitable business in India?

How to start an edtech startup in India

Sources

Scheme figures are those shown on the official pages when this article was written.
