For education leaders
School principal jobs in India fall into five main groups, and each one is filled through a different door: private CBSE and state-board schools hire through their own management, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas hire through a national recruitment notification with a written exam and interview, state government schools fill the post under each state’s own rules, residential schools add boarding duties, and school groups hire directors and administrators above the principal. Knowing which door you are standing at tells you what to prepare, where to look and what to ask.
This guide is for leaders looking for their next role. The full path to the job is covered in how to become a school principal in India; here the focus is the search itself: the kinds of openings, what official documents state, where genuine vacancies appear, and what to ask before you sign.

The five kinds of school principal jobs in India

A search for “school principal jobs in India” mixes very different employers. Sort every listing into one of these groups first.
| Type of role | Who hires you | How the post is filled | What the job adds to running a school |
|---|---|---|---|
| Principal of a private CBSE-affiliated school | The trust, society or company that runs the school | The school’s own advertisement, interview and selection; qualifications must meet clause 5.1 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws | Compliance with CBSE bye-laws, admissions, fee-paying parents, the management committee |
| Principal of a private state-board school | The school management | The school’s own process, under the rules of that state | State rules, state language and curriculum, local inspection |
| Principal of a Kendriya Vidyalaya (KVS) or Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (NVS) | KVS or NVS, autonomous bodies under the Ministry of Education | A published recruitment notification, a two-tier written exam and an interview | Posting anywhere in India; at NVS, a fully residential campus |
| Principal of a state government school | The state government | Set by each state’s own recruitment rules, often through promotion | Government service rules, state transfers |
| School director or school administrator in a group | A school chain, trust or education company | Corporate-style hiring | Several campuses, budgets, opening new schools, appointing principals |
Residential school principal jobs sit across these groups. Navodaya Vidyalayas are the largest public example: the official KVS–NVS notification describes the 653 JNVs as co-educational, fully residential schools up to senior secondary level, mainly in rural areas, where staff live on campus and take on house duties and student welfare.
What the official rules say about eligibility
What you need depends on who runs the school and which board it follows. Two official documents cover most of the jobs you will see.
CBSE-affiliated schools
The CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws, 2018 say in clause 5.1 that the minimum qualifications for the teaching staff, including the Principal, Vice-Principal and Head of school, should follow three sources: the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) regulations on minimum qualifications; the recruitment rules of the appropriate government where the school is located, or the recruitment rules of KVS or NVS; and, for subjects introduced by CBSE, Appendix VII of the bye-laws. Clause 5.1.4 sets the order: NCTE regulations prevail over the others.
Ask a CBSE school which recruitment rule it applies to you, and read it yourself.
Clause 9.2 of the same bye-laws lists the head’s duties: ex-officio member secretary of the School Management Committee, head of office, responsible for accounts and records, in charge of admissions and the timetable, a staff meeting at least once a month, and at least one period a day of teaching. It makes a good interview script: describe how you have done each part.
KVS and NVS
For Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, eligibility is written in each recruitment notification, summarised below.
KVS and NVS principal recruitment in detail
KVS principal recruitment and NVS principal recruitment are run together. Recruitment Notification 01/2025, dated 13 November 2025, was issued by CBSE on behalf of KVS and NVS. It listed 134 principal vacancies in KVS and 93 in NVS, alongside 58 vice-principal posts in KVS. KVS, according to the notification, runs 1,288 Kendriya Vidyalayas, including three abroad.
| Item | Principal, KVS and NVS (Notification 01/2025) |
|---|---|
| Pay scale | Level 12 of the Pay Matrix (Rs. 78,800–2,09,200) |

Note that every experience route counts service in central or state government or their autonomous bodies, and that the written exam carries most of the weight. Leaders from private schools should read the experience clause closely before applying.
Looking for a role where you lead the whole school, not only the staffroom?
NIJIN, a Japanese education company, is looking for one person to start and lead NIJIN Academy India as its business head and principal. NIJIN Academy is an alternative school in Japan, attended from home through a metaverse campus and in 52 physical classrooms. Teaching experience is not required; managing an organisation and hiring people count most.
See the Country Head role in IndiaWhere to find genuine vacancies
Job boards are useful but second-hand. Where possible, go to where the vacancy is first published.
- KVS and NVS: the official recruitment pages. The 2025 notification tells candidates to rely only on the official websites of CBSE (cbse.gov.in), KVS (kvsangathan.nic.in) and NVS (navodaya.gov.in). Notices, corrigenda, admit cards and press notes for the 2025 drive are listed on CBSE’s recruitment page.
- State government schools: your state. Watch the state school education department and, where the state recruits through it, the state public service commission. Rules and routes differ by state.
- Private schools: the school’s own website and its management. Many trusts advertise on their own site or in newspapers before a job board copies the listing. Contact the school office to confirm that the post is real and open.
- School groups: the group’s careers page. Director and school administrator jobs are often posted only there, or filled through referral.
Before you send documents to anyone: check that the school exists and is affiliated. CBSE runs its school affiliation system, SARAS, on its own website; use CBSE’s official pages, not a listing, to confirm that a school is affiliated. Be careful with any “recruitment” that asks you to pay a fee to a private person or to an unofficial website. The 2025 KVS–NVS notification lists its own application fees and directs candidates to official websites only.
How to read a principal job listing
A short listing often says little. Treat it as an opening question, not as the job, and write down what is missing.
- Which board and which classes: CBSE, a state board or another; up to Class 10 or Class 12.
- Who the employer is: the name of the trust, society or company, and who sits on the management committee.
- Which qualification rule the school is applying under CBSE clause 5.1, if it is a CBSE school.
- Why the post is open: a new school, a retirement, or a principal who left after a short time.
- Whether “immediate joining” means mid-year, and what happens to your notice period.
- Whether the job includes residence and boarding duties, as in residential schools.

What to ask in the interview
A principal interview runs both ways: you are judging whether you can do the job with the authority on offer. These questions follow what the official documents put on a principal’s desk.
| Area | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | Who appoints and dismisses teachers? Who signs purchases and fee decisions? | Clause 9.2 makes the principal responsible for staff, purchases and accounts. Responsibility without authority is the most common reason principals leave. |
| Staffing | How many sections and teachers does the school have? How is it meeting clause 5.4? | Clause 5.4 of the CBSE bye-laws sets a pupil–teacher ratio of no more than 30:1 and 1.5 teachers per section, excluding the principal, PE teacher and counsellor. |
| Compliance | When is the affiliation due for extension? Are there open matters with the board or the state? | The principal must ensure the school complies with the Affiliation and Examination Bye-Laws. |
| Management committee | Who sits on it, how often does it meet, and who sets its agenda? | The principal is its ex-officio member secretary under clause 9.2.1. |
| Terms | Pay, probation, contract length, notice period, housing for residential posts. | Ask for these in writing before you resign from your current post. |
For a director or administrator post in a group, also ask how many campuses you oversee, whether you hire the principals, and which numbers you are judged on.
Employed principal or business leader of your own school
Most principal jobs are employed posts: someone else owns the school and sets the budget. The comparison below is about the shape of the role, not which is better.
| Question | Employed principal | Business leader who also leads the school |
|---|---|---|
| Who hires you | A management, trust, government body or group | You start the organisation, alone or with a partner |
| How you are paid | A salary set by the employer or a pay scale | Tied to how the organisation performs; nothing is guaranteed |
| What you decide | The school day, staff and parents, within limits set by others | Also which children to serve, the format, the fee, the team and the budget |
| What you are judged on | Results, compliance, staff and parent satisfaction | All of those, plus whether the organisation earns more than it spends |
| Main risk | Losing the post if the management changes direction | No revenue means no income from the business |
| Suits someone who | Wants to lead a school inside an existing structure | Has managed an organisation, hired people and wants to build something |

The NIJIN Academy India Country Head is an example of the second column: business head and principal in one. As a guide, compensation is 10% of revenue excluding tax: JPY 100 million of revenue gives JPY 10 million, with a cap of JPY 50 million at JPY 500 million of revenue. With no revenue the formula pays nothing; no income is guaranteed. Anyone you ask to do part of the role is paid out of your 10%.
You can start as a co-owner of a local company set up together (for example, you 20%, NIJIN 80%; if you invest, the guide is JPY 1 to 2 million from you and JPY 4 to 8 million from NIJIN), or on a service contract, even as a side job, with the same compensation guide. Investment is optional. It is not a franchise. Every other term is discussed in the interview.
Figures are those published by NIJIN. “Attendance recognition” means that the school a child is registered at counts learning at NIJIN Academy as school attendance; the decision is made by each school’s principal.
Questions and answers
Where can I find school principal jobs in India with immediate joining?
Mostly in private schools and school groups, which hire on their own timetable. Confirm the post with the school’s office. KVS and NVS posts go through written exams and an interview, so they are not immediate.
What is the salary of a KVS or NVS principal?
Recruitment Notification 01/2025 places the principal post in Level 12 of the Pay Matrix (Rs. 78,800–2,09,200). Private schools set their own pay, so ask for it in writing during the interview.
What is the age limit for principal jobs in KVS and NVS?
The 2025 notification sets a minimum of 35 and a maximum of 50 years for principal, with relaxations for some categories as listed in the notification. Check the current notification, because terms can change.
What is the difference between school director jobs and principal jobs in India?
A principal leads one school; in a CBSE school, with the duties in clause 9.2 of the bye-laws. A school director or administrator usually works above several principals in a group. Titles vary, so read the duties.
Is this a job or a business?
A principal post in a private or government school is a job. The NIJIN Academy India Country Head is closer to a business: you lead NIJIN Academy India as its business head and principal, either as a co-owner of a local company or, to begin with, on a service contract. Compensation is a guide of 10% of revenue, and nothing is guaranteed. Investment is optional.
Do I need teaching experience to lead NIJIN Academy India?
No. Leadership, management, business ability and the skills of a principal matter most, along with experience of managing an organisation and hiring people. English alone is enough to apply.
