For education leaders
Education leadership jobs in India go well beyond the principal’s office: vice principal and head of school, academic director of a school group, school operations head, system posts such as Assistant Commissioner in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan or Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, city or country head at an edtech company, programme or state head at an education NGO, and founder-leader of a new school. Only some of these have qualifications set in official rules. For the rest, your record of leading people, budgets and results is what gets you hired.
This guide is for people who have led a team in a school, an education company or a non-profit. If you are looking only for principal posts, our guide to school principal jobs in India covers vacancies and interviews in depth, and how to become a school principal in India covers the qualification path. Here we look at the wider map of leadership roles, what official documents require, and how a salaried job compares with leading a school as its business head.

The map of education leadership jobs in India

A search for “education leadership jobs” mixes very different posts. Sort each one by who you answer to and what you are held responsible for. Exact titles vary by employer.
| Role | Typical employer | What you answer for |
|---|---|---|
| Principal / Head of School | A private trust, society or company; KVS or NVS; a state government | The whole school: staff, admissions, accounts, records, compliance with the board |
| Vice Principal | The same employers | A share of the principal’s duties, often academics, discipline or a section of the school |
| Academic Director / Head of Academics | A school group or chain | Curriculum, assessment and teacher quality across several campuses |
| School Operations Head / School Administrator | A school group or a trust | Budgets, transport, facilities, admissions targets, new campus openings |
| Assistant Commissioner | KVS, or NVS (Academics) | A senior post above principal (equivalent to Group-A), open to serving government principals |
| City, regional or country head | An edtech or education services company | Revenue, a sales or centre network, the local team |
| Programme director / state head | An education NGO or foundation | A programme across schools or districts, funders, government relationships |
| Founder-leader / Country Head | Your own organisation, alone or with a parent organisation | Everything, including whether the school survives |
National policy points the same way. The National Education Policy 2020 endorses grouping schools into “school complexes” (one secondary school with the schools offering lower grades within five to ten kilometres) led by “school complex leaders” (paragraphs 7.6 and 5.16), and says outstanding teachers with leadership skills should be trained for academic leadership positions in schools, school complexes, BRCs, CRCs, BITEs, DIETs and government departments (5.19). How a state turns this into posts is up to the state.
What official rules require, and where they stop
For school posts, two sets of official documents cover most cases. For company and NGO posts, the employer sets the qualification.
CBSE-affiliated schools. Clause 5.1 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws, 2018 says that the minimum qualifications for teaching staff, “including the Principal/ Vice-Principal/ Head of school”, follow the NCTE regulations, the recruitment rules of the appropriate government or of KVS/NVS, and, for subjects introduced by CBSE, Appendix VII. Under clause 5.1.4, the NCTE regulations prevail over the other two. Ask a CBSE school which rule it applies to your post; details are in how to become a school principal in India.
KVS and NVS. Recruitment Notification 01/2025 (13 November 2025), issued by CBSE on behalf of KVS and NVS, set out leadership posts at three levels. Principal posts are covered in our principal jobs guide; the other two levels are summarised here.
| Item | Vice-Principal (KVS) | Assistant Commissioner (KVS) / Assistant Commissioner (Academics) (NVS) |
|---|---|---|
| Tentative vacancies in the 2025 notification | 58 | 8 (KVS) and 9 (NVS) |
| Pay scale | Level 10 of the Pay Matrix (Rs. 56,100–1,77,500) | Level 12 of the Pay Matrix (Rs. 78,800–2,09,200) |
| Age | Minimum 35, maximum 45 years | Not exceeding 50 years (KVS) / 45 years (NVS) |
| Academic and professional qualification | Master’s degree with at least 50% marks, and B.Ed. (50%) from an NCTE-recognised institution or an integrated equivalent | Master’s degree with at least 50% marks, and B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognised institution (KVS also accepts an integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed.) |
| Experience | Vice Principal in Pay Level 10 in government or autonomous bodies, or at least 6 years as PGT or lecturer in Pay Level 8 | At least 3 years as Principal in Pay Level 12 in central, state or autonomous bodies |
Summary of the official notification; vacancies were stated as tentative. Relaxations and the selection process are in the original.
Private groups, edtech companies and NGOs. For academic director, operations head, city head or programme director roles, we found no national rule fixing the qualification. But if the role makes you head of a CBSE school, clause 5.1 applies, whatever the title.
Skills that carry across schools, companies and NGOs
The same work appears under different names in each sector. CBSE’s list of a head of school’s duties (clause 9.2 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws) reads like a general manager’s job, which makes it a useful checklist.
- Governance: the principal is ex-officio member secretary of the School Management Committee (9.2.1). In a company this is reporting to a board; in an NGO, to trustees and funders.
- Money and records: maintaining accounts, school records and teachers’ service books (9.2.5), and making purchases according to the rules (9.2.7).
- Returns to authorities: furnishing returns and information to the state government or the board within the specified dates (9.2.6).
- Leading staff: supervising, guiding and controlling the work of teaching and non-teaching staff (9.2.11).
- Running the operation: admissions, the timetable and the allocation of duties and teaching load (9.2.12).
- Keeping the place safe and usable: drinking water, buildings, furniture, toilets and playgrounds (9.2.10).
Keep learning on record. The National Education Policy 2020 expects school principals and school complex leaders to take part in 50 hours or more of continuing professional development a year, covering leadership and management as well as content and pedagogy (paragraph 5.16). Whatever sector you apply to, a list of what you have studied and changed in the last two years is stronger evidence than a list of titles.
What does not carry over easily: an edtech city head is judged on monthly revenue; a school head is judged by parents and teachers on things no dashboard shows. Show how you have handled the side that is new to you.
Where to find education leadership jobs
Go to where a vacancy is first published; job boards copy listings, sometimes after the post is filled.
- Government school leadership posts: the official pages. The 2025 KVS–NVS notification was issued through CBSE, and notices for that drive are on CBSE’s recruitment page. KVS also publishes on its own site. State government posts follow each state’s own process.
- The government’s National Career Service portal. NCS is an initiative of the Ministry of Labour and Employment that offers job search, job matching and job fair information.
- School groups, edtech companies and NGOs: their own careers pages. Academic director, operations head, city head and programme director roles are often posted only there, or filled through referrals.
- Check before you send documents. For a CBSE school, confirm affiliation on CBSE’s official SARAS system. Be careful with anyone who asks a private payment to “process” a job; official recruitments state their own fees.
Searches for “education leadership jobs near me” mostly return job-board pages; use them to discover employers, then apply at the source.
Looking for a leadership role where you build the school, not only run it?
NIJIN is looking for one person to start and lead NIJIN Academy India, as its business head and its principal. Teaching experience is not required; experience of managing an organisation and hiring people is what counts. Investment is optional: you can start on a service contract, even alongside your current work, or as a co-owner of a local company.
See the Country Head role in IndiaSix questions to ask before you accept a leadership offer
A “Director” may run five campuses or none. These questions work for every role on the map.
| Question | What a clear answer looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Who do I report to, and who can overrule me? | A named person or committee, and the decisions that are yours alone | “The management” with no names |
| Can I hire and let go of my own team? | You choose your direct reports, within a stated budget | Responsibility for results with no say in who delivers them |
| Which numbers will I be judged on? | Three to five measures, written down, with a review date | “We will see how it goes” |
| Do I control a budget? | An amount and a signing limit | Every purchase approved by someone else |
| Why is this post open? | Growth, a new campus, a planned retirement | Several people in the post in a short time |
| What are the terms, in writing? | Pay, probation, notice period, contract length | Terms offered only verbally |

Employed leader or leader who builds: two paths compared

Beyond comparing employers, compare the two basic shapes of the work.
| Employed leadership job | Leading a school as its business head (e.g. NIJIN Academy India Country Head) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you inherit | An existing school, team and reputation | A working model from another country; the local school is built from zero |
| Who decides direction | The owner, trust or company | You, working with the parent organisation |
| Pay | Salary set by the employer or a pay scale | For NIJIN, a guideline of 10% of revenue (excluding tax), up to JPY 50 million; no revenue means nothing under this formula |
| Ownership | Usually none | For NIJIN, optional: for example 20% of a local company, or start on a service contract |
| Main risk | Responsibility without authority | Building revenue before income |
| Who it suits | Leaders who want to improve a running organisation | Leaders who want to start a company in India and solve a problem in education |
Neither path is better in general. If you are more energised by building than by maintaining, look seriously at the second. Our guides to how to run a school in India and whether school is a profitable business in India cover what that work involves day to day.
Is this a job or a business? The Country Head role

It is both. NIJIN Academy is an alternative school in Japan for elementary and junior high school students who do not fit conventional school, opened in September 2023 and run by NIJIN Inc. It is hybrid: children attend from home through a metaverse campus, choose from about 100 live online classes a month, and can also go to physical classrooms across Japan. NIJIN describes it as one of the largest alternative schools in Japan.
Figures are those published by NIJIN. “Attendance recognition” means the school a child is registered at counts learning at NIJIN Academy as school attendance.
The Country Head of NIJIN Academy India holds two jobs usually split between two people: business head (families, team, revenue) and principal (what children experience, whether the place is safe). Deciding which children to serve first, in which language and format, is the first real piece of work. It is not a franchise: you do not pay to copy a format.
| Revenue (excluding tax) | Country Head’s compensation (10%, as a guideline) |
|---|---|
| JPY 100 million | JPY 10 million |
| JPY 200 million | JPY 20 million |
| JPY 500 million or more | JPY 50 million (cap) |
| No revenue | None under this formula |
The rows show how the formula works. They are not a forecast or a promise of income. Amounts are in Japanese yen only. If you hand part of the work to someone else, that person is paid out of your 10%. Investment is optional: if you choose to co-own a local company, the guide is JPY 1 to 2 million from you and JPY 4 to 8 million from NIJIN, decided together. Every other term is discussed in the interview.
Questions and answers
What qualifications do I need for school leadership jobs in India?
For the head, principal or vice principal of a CBSE-affiliated school, clause 5.1 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws points to NCTE regulations and the applicable recruitment rules. For KVS and NVS, each notification states them (in 2025, a master’s degree with at least 50% marks and a B.Ed.). Companies and NGOs set their own.
Can I get an education leadership job without a B.Ed. or teaching experience?
For school head posts governed by CBSE or KVS/NVS rules, check the rule that applies, as these posts carry teaching-related requirements. Many group, company and NGO leadership roles weigh management experience more heavily. NIJIN does not require teaching experience for the NIJIN Academy India Country Head.
Are there remote education leadership jobs in India?
Some company and NGO roles are hybrid or remote; that is set by each employer. Most school head posts require you on campus, because the duties in CBSE’s clause 9.2, from admissions to buildings, are on-site work.
What does a country director or country manager in education do?
They lead an organisation’s whole operation in one country: choosing where to start, building the legal and financial base, hiring the team and owning the numbers. Our guide to country manager roles in education explains the role and the common pay models.
Is the NIJIN Academy India Country Head a job or a business?
Both. You lead a school as its business head and principal, with 10% of revenue as a guideline (cap JPY 50 million). Investment is optional: start on a service contract or as a co-owner. Other terms are discussed in the interview.
